Wappoo Creek House is a small footprint house on a tiny parcel of upland site along Lowcountry marsh in Charleston, SC. Raised above the ground to accommodate FEMA requirements, the upper floors have expansive views towards Wappoo Creek. The house sits on a sliver of buildable land that required an ultra-compact floor plan to be properly located within setbacks. The complex site was so close to minimum requirements for construction that a large portion of the design process revolved around what was allowed from a zoning standpoint. These rules helped to establish an architectural form that would serve as boundaries for efficient space planning to fit the client’s desired program. The result is a beautiful Lowcountry home that acts as a modern jewel box amongst the marshy creek.
